“I start with a clean slate. I have no specific concept or image in mind when I begin. Actually, a dot on the page connotes an entire image for me. There are no parameters, nothing I “have to do”. What happens after that is up to the muse and the impact of its’ influence on my hands and arms. My imagination takes over. I become merely a vessel of expression through which the emotion, color and images evolve.”

Allowing the mind to actively travel each time the eye confronts a piece of his work, the art of Patrick A. Delaney is both definable and indefinable. He is not a slave to the medium or method. He mixes acrylic with ink or marker with drawing pen. He flows in the moment. The images, themselves, accentuate the diversity in style that defines his work. There is an innate sense of continuous motion, irrespective of what medium he is working in. It is not uncommon for two people to look at the same image and have actively dueling interpretations. There is an emotional stirring that occurs. One has a physical reaction to his work. As Delaney puts it: “It’s almost as if I am taking shallow breaths and suddenly I get a burst of fresh sea air. It invigorates my whole body, but in particular, it invigorates my mind. “ “Think about eating a fabulous meal, seasoned with all sorts of interesting spices. Your palate just wants to dance.”

This is what his art does when one allows oneself to be pulled into it. From early childhood, music has played an incredibly important role in Delaney's life, and he has always found a forum in which to express his passion for it. This lifelong emergence in music has also embedded itself in his art. From the flowing lines and intricate patterns to the hues, shades and tones of the pigments that he chooses, music is everywhere apparent, “When I am working with ink, or rather, throwing the ink on the white canvas, I feel a thrill inside similar to what one would feel on a roller coaster soaring down a steep drop. It’s as if my spirit is flying with the paint from my body to the canvas.”
